Media: 500 athletes from Russia and Belarus will be admitted to the Asian Games
Russian and Belarusian athletes will be admitted to the 2023 Asian Games in neutral status. On Saturday, July 8, according to Inside the Games.
According to the publication, up to 500 athletes from these two countries will be able to participate in the competition, which will be held from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China. They will compete outside the medal count.
Participation in the Asian Games will allow athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris next year.
The Olympic Council of Asia, in a comment to Match TV, noted that Russian and Belarusian athletes will participate in the Asian Games if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allows them to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games.
IOC Recommendations on the admission of Russians and Belarusians to competitions
On March 28, the Executive Board of the IOC recommended that federations lift the protection measures that prohibit the participation of Belarusian and Russian athletes in international competitions. Access can only be granted if a number of conditions are met. Among them – a performance in a neutral state (without a flag and anthem) and only in individual competitions. In addition, these athletes must not have ties with the Russian or Belarusian army, with the power structures and security agencies of these countries.
The IOC’s position caused a wave of outrage in the world of sports and politics. Many eminent athletes and politicians have made calls to remove Russians and Belarusians from participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Ukraine will boycott competitions with the participation of Russians and Belarusians.
