“Yanachaga Chemilen National Park in the Pasco region is the site of a recent discovery for science, the discovery of a new species of frog,” Cernanp said in a statement.

The frog Osteocephalus vasquezi has a “spiny” back

The frog has a “spiny” back and belongs to the genus Osteocephalus, a species that lives in a natural park located on the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes, in the Amazon River basin, in the jungles of central Peru.

The new species has “a cream-colored abdomen with chocolate spots, and its tadpole has a very large mouth.”

According to scientists, this is a species related to Osteocephalus mimeticus, endemic to the Peruvian Andes, which lives in the mountain rainforest ecosystem.

This new species was discovered in the province of Oxapampa at an altitude of 1000 to 1150 meters.

According to research, Osteocephalus vasquezi separated from related species at the beginning of the Pleistocene, about 2.5 million years ago.

Scientists from the Rainforest Partnership, the Peruvian Institute of Herpetology and the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador participated in this discovery.
