President Volodymyr Zelenskyi was on Zmiiny Island and recorded a video address to Ukrainians on the 500th day of the total war, Ukrainian Pravda reports.
“I am grateful to everyone who fought here against the occupiers. We honored the memory of the heroes who gave their lives in this battle, one of the most important during the years of the Great War. Glory to every man and woman fighting for safety in our Black Sea!” Zelensky said.
The head of intelligence of the Ministry of Defense Kyryll Budanov and the head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak arrived on the island together with the Kyiv leader and the military.
In late June 2022, the Russians announced that they had withdrawn from Snake Island, a strategic position in the Black Sea, to “save the lives” of the fighters, but maintained that the island remained under their control.
Moscow regarded it as a “gesture of goodwill”.
