KoKo Lee, the Disney star and Hong Kong singer whose song from the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was nominated for an Oscar, has died at the age of 48, her family said, dpa reported.
Lee died on Wednesday after falling into a coma following a suicide attempt on Sunday, her sisters said. She died at Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong, the city where Lee lived.
“KoKo suffered from depression for several years, but her condition worsened dramatically in recent months,” wrote Carol and Nancy Lee on social media. “Although KoKo sought professional help and did everything possible to fight depression, unfortunately the demon inside her got the best from her,” they added.
“On July 2, she tried to commit suicide at her home and was taken to the hospital. Despite the efforts made by the hospital team to save her and bring her out of the coma, she finally died on July 5, 2023,” the message reads.
Lee spent part of his childhood in San Francisco, and later studied at the University of California, Irvine. She rose to prominence in the 1990s and released pop albums in Mandarin, English and Cantonese. The last of his 18 studio albums was released in 2013.
Her song “A Love Before Time” was nominated for Best Original Song at the 2001 Academy Awards, and Lee performed the song during the gala. The nomination was one of 10 for Crouching Tiger, Crouching Dragon, which won four Oscars.
Lee also voiced the main character in the Mandarin version of Disney’s animated film Mulan and recorded a song for the film Reflection.
