A white powder found at the White House on Sunday night, which temporarily closed part of the presidential complex, was identified by the Washington Fire Department as cocaine, according to the Washington Post, Reuters reports.
The Secret Service confirmed to Reuters that an “unknown object” had been found that caused part of the White House to be locked down, but referred other questions to the fire department, which declined to comment.
A Secret Service official said in an emailed statement Sunday night that part of the White House was on lockdown as a precaution as officers “investigated an unknown object found in a work area.”
According to the spokesman, the object was discovered in the west wing. The West Wing is the president’s residential area and houses the Oval Office, the press area, and offices and workspaces for the president’s advisers and staff.
President Joe Biden was not in the White House at the time. Hundreds of people regularly work in or pass through the West Wing of the White House.
“The District of Columbia Fire Department was called to evaluate and quickly determined that the item was non-hazardous,” the Secret Service added. There was an “investigation into the cause and manner” of how the substance reached the White House, the spokesman said.
Two “officials familiar with the matter” confirmed to the Washington Post that the substance found at the White House was cocaine.
