In a telephone conversation on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who is demanding clear commitments from NATO at the alliance’s upcoming summit on July 11 and 12, AFP reports.
“The President of the Republic confirmed his wish that this summit would allow for progress in terms of relations between Ukraine and NATO, as well as become an opportunity for the allies to provide Ukraine with stable security support,” the Elysée emphasized.
Volodymyr Zelensky is asking the Alliance for “concrete” elements regarding the prospect of membership after the end of the war provoked by the Russian invasion of his country.
The allies are still seeking common ground on the security guarantees they are willing to provide to Kyiv, as well as on inviting Ukraine to eventually join NATO.
At the summit in Vilnius, NATO hopes to hold the first meeting of the new Ukraine-NATO Council with Volodymyr Zelenskyi, although Ukraine is not expected to join the Alliance immediately.
Emmanuel Macron also talked about the “situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP” occupied by “Russian troops”, and his colleague was worried about “dangerous provocations” from Moscow.
The presidents also discussed the military situation in Ukraine and military aid to France, reports the Elysee Palace.
