Seven-time career Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic had no problems in the opening round of this year’s Grand Slam tournament. The former world leader outlasted Pedro Cacin in 3 sets to advance to the second round.
Novak Djokovic, debut on grass at Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic made his debut at this year’s Wimbledon and easily defeated Argentina’s Pedro Cacin 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4).
The former world number one easily won the first two sets, but had some difficulties in the third act, where a tiebreak was required.
At the end of the debate, Nole delivered a speech in his characteristic style. Multiple Wimbledon champion Djokovic praised his opponent and said that he feels very happy and ready for another triumph on the famous grass.
The match was also interrupted by rain and the roof of the arena had to be pulled so that the match could continue.
“It was certainly a disappointment for all the crowds who were waiting for us to take the field. We both wanted to play, but you know the conditions under the roof were not very good. When the roof was opened it was a different story, five or ten minutes later we were outside in the temple of tennis and it was really special.
Wimbledon is my second home in terms of history and tradition. Throughout my career, I have said many times that coming to Wimbledon meant that I dreamed of winning.
My childhood dream came true in 2011 and you know that every year I come back with these memories and the dream of Serbia winning the biggest and most important tennis tournament in the world. I’m happy, it feels great to be here!
Applause to Pedro Cacin for his show tonight. Especially in the third set, he served very well, was extremely accurate, and it was not easy to stop him on serve. It was the first time I met him, he is a young and promising player, very strong, who has shown that he can play well on grass.
For me, the opening match is always a bit difficult, because on grass the movement, style of play, tactics are different, and it takes time to adapt.
I’ve done it pretty well in recent years though, and there’s no reason not to think I can do it again. I go step by step and hope to raise the level of tennis by force of will. Thank you very much!” said Novak Djokovic.
