Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced on Friday to eight years of disqualification by judges of the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) in Brasilia for abuse of power and disinformation during last year’s presidential election, international press reported, citing News.ro. .
Five of the seven judges of the TSE voted for the conviction and two against.
Jair Bolsonaro contested the results of the presidential election held in Brazil in October 2022, in which he lost to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
He is accused of creating a nationwide nullification movement that culminated in his supporters storming the Supreme Court, the Congress building and the presidential palace for several hours on January 8, 2023.
Earlier this week, the judge in charge of the case, Benedito Gonçalves, voted to ban him until 2030, saying he had spread “doubts and incited conspiracy theories” during a meeting with foreign ambassadors.
Jair Bolsonaro, who denies any wrongdoing, called the vote a “stab in the back”. He has already announced that he intends to appeal to the Supreme Court.
“I did not attack the electoral system, I only pointed out its possible flaws,” he said in an interview with Itatiaia radio station on Friday before the announcement.
