Gerardo “Tata” Martino (former FC Barcelona coach) will coach Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami, the MLS club announced on Wednesday.

At the age of 60, Tata Martino was free of contract from November 2022. He last coached the Mexican national team.

“Please, Dad. The club appointed Gerardo Martino as the new technical director. The MLS Cup-winning coach and MLS Coach of the Year, who has experience with the national teams of Argentina and Mexico, FC Barcelona and others, joins the club after receiving the necessary documentation,” Inter Miami said in a statement.

The coach also worked with Lionel Messi in FC Barcelona (2013/2014), as well as in the Argentina national team (2014 – 2016).

The technician also coached Platense, Central Cordoba, Colon, Libertad, Newell’s Old Boys, Atlanta United and was the coach of Paraguay, Argentina and Mexico.

Gerardo Martino has 11 trophies, only one won in Europe: the Spanish Super Cup with FC Barcelona.

Recently, David Beckham’s team was led by interim Javier Morales, who broke up with Englishman Phil Neville at the beginning of June.

Lionel Messi will make his debut for Inter Miami on July 21

MLS club owner Jorge Mas said in an interview with the Miami Herald that Lionel will play his first game for Inter Miami on July 21.

It will be a scoring game for the League Cup and Inter Miami will face the Mexicans from Cruz Azul.

After two seasons at PSG, Messi announced on June 7 that he would be leaving the Parc des Princes group to play for Inter Miami.

According to the Miami Herald, Messi will earn no more than $60 million a year at Inter. The contract is designed for two and a half years.
