Trump’s complaint against Carroll in Manhattan federal court followed an unusual jury finding in May that the former president sexually assaulted and defamed but did not rape Carroll, a former columnist for Elle magazine.

Trump is calling for her to drop the charges and seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said Trump’s complaint was “nothing more than his latest attempt to deflect responsibility” for the jury’s verdict.

“Donald Trump is once again claiming, against both logic and facts, that he was acquitted by a jury that found he sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan said.

Trump’s complaint signals that his legal battle with Carroll is unlikely to end anytime soon, as both sides trade accusations and denials in the media.

Trump, who is running for another term in the White House in 2024 and has a significant lead over his Republican rivals, has denied that Carroll was raped. He appealed the verdict, which ordered him to pay $5 million in restitution.
