The Belgian company Avesta Battery and Energy Engineering (ABEE) will build a battery factory for electric vehicles in the free zone of Galaţi, an investment of 1.4 billion euros that will eventually create around 8,000 jobs, according to the press service of the Galaţi City Hall.

According to the cited source, the official announcement of this investment took place on Tuesday at the town hall of the city of Ninove, Belgium, in the presence of representatives of the ABEE company and high-ranking officials: the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexandre De. Kroo, Director General of the European Commission Joaquim Nunes de Almeida, Romanian Minister of Economy Stefan Radu Oprea, Mayor of Ninove Tania De Jonge, Member of the European Parliament Dan Nika and Mayor of Galata Ionuc Puceanu.

“Our city is becoming more and more attractive for investors. I am glad that today, together with an important delegation from Romania, I participated in the signing of one of the largest joint projects of our country with Belgium. This is a major investment of 1.4 billion euros, for which quite a lot of work has been done recently and which will require even more efforts to implement.

It was not easy to bring this project to Galați because we had to fulfill several requests, but I am happy to say that by reaching this point in the project, our city and the whole community of south-eastern Romania will benefit a lot. And because of this important investment, Galatsiul appeared on the economic map of the region, becoming closer to its goals, namely to become a strategic gateway in the east of the European Union.

“Romvolt is a lithium-ion battery plant project in Galața, Romania, with a total production capacity of 22 GWh and a total investment of €1.4 billion. Battery production is crucial for the EU due to the current market situation where China dominates the supply of lithium-ion batteries.

In the future, additional production capacity is needed to meet growing European demand. Romvolt will supply batteries mainly for the automotive industry, in Romania there are Renault/Dacia and Ford, but also for the stationary market, as the transition to renewable energy requires storage.
