Russia’s Pravda newspaper published an editorial on Monday that could be compared to an indictment, slamming Russia’s loyal partners and those who betrayed them during the military mutiny launched by Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday night.
“The events of June 24 showed Vladimir Putin the true face of his allies abroad. Turkey has proven to be more loyal than many of Russia’s CSTO partners,” the article begins, referring to the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a military alliance led by Moscow.
“Pravda” notes that after Vladimir Putin was informed about the mutiny, the Russian leader spoke by phone with the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkey, referring to the Kremlin’s official website.
“The Kremlin does not indicate who initiated the conversation, but it is more likely that they called the Russian president,” Pravda notes, noting that all 4 heads of state “have one important common point: they all faced each other in the recent past destabilization attempts in their countries and are well aware of how important the support of allies is in these situations.”
Pravda then cites the fact that Putin “personally helped all these people stay in power”:
- Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in January 2022, sending “peacekeeping” forces during unprecedented protests in the country;
- Lukashenko, sending “military experts” during mass protests caused by rigged presidential elections in August 2020, and “of course, economically after the West did not recognize him as president”;
- the leader of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev because of “measures taken to stabilize the situation on the very first day of the unrest in Karakalpakstan (July 2022)”;
- Erdogan for preventing a coup attempt in 2016.
In the case of the Turkish president, Pravda notes that by extending an agreement to export Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea, Moscow helped Erdogan win the presidential election at the end of May. Russian journalists suggest that the deal brokered by Erdogan allowed him to present himself to the Turkish public as a major player on the international stage.
“Pravda” accuses the president of Kazakhstan of treason, but does not praise the NATO head of state
The Russian newspaper notes that while Lukashenko offered help and was the Kremlin’s mediator in negotiations with Prigozhin, the Kazakh president limited himself to declaring that the military uprising was Russia’s internal matter.
“There is either ingratitude or fear of the West’s reaction. In the first case, Tokayev did not rise to the rank of a decent person, in the second case, he simply betrayed Putin,” writes Pravda, taking into account that the president of Kazakhstan declared in June 2016 that his country would respect the sanctions imposed by the West against Russia in order to not to introduce sanctions against own companies.
“In addition, the president of Kazakhstan is short-sighted. No matter how much Kazakh oil is sent to Germany, they will still remain alien Asians for the Germans,” the Russian publication accuses.
Regarding the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, “Pravda” notes that although it is not known what exactly he conveyed to Putin, the very fact that he called the leader in the Kremlin is for him “a big plus of karma”, since Uzbekistan is not a member of military alliances. or otherwise of Russia.
Addressing Turkish President Recep Erdogan, the article notes that he has shown courage.
“The president of a NATO member country, Turkey, called and offered help,” Pravda noted, adding that Erdogan acted knowing that he would provoke anger in Washington and Brussels.
“This suggests that this person appreciates help at a critical moment, is a sovereign president and a friend of Putin,” Pravda notes.
Criticism of China and Kim Jong Un’s regime in the Russian press
Also in the pluses section, the article mentions that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega expressed their unconditional support for Vladimir Putin on Saturday.
“Here, in fact, are all the allies (with the exception of Kazakhstan) of the Russian Federation on the difficult day of the military rebellion. Neither CSTO members Emomali Rahmon (President of Tajikistan) nor Sadir Japarov (President of Kyrgyzstan), nor Xi Jinping showed even minimal public solidarity on June 24,” Pravda accuses.
Referring to the reaction of North Korea, the Russian publication notes that it declared that it was on Putin’s side only on Sunday, June 25, “when everything became clear” – implying that Prigozhin said on Saturday night that he had decided to end the rebellion .
“Beijing spoke in a neutral spirit about non-interference in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation. The formula can be applied to these “allies”: “If Putin’s rule is unstable, then supporting him is a bad thing,” Pravda accuses.
Prime Minister of Armenia, called a “Cossack manipulated by the West” during the Prigozhin uprising
“I forgot about the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, who called late in the evening on June 24, but there is no record of his call on the Kremlin website. why We suspect that the call was for intelligence, because there were signals in the West about “observation” of the situation in the Russian Federation, so Pashinyan was “sent” to find out what was happening,” the indictment further states.
In this regard, “Pravda” reminds that the press release of the Yerevan government states that “Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that although the events taking place in Russia are an internal matter of Russia, he would like to receive information about the situation in a friendly country “.
As for the position of the West, the article says that, judging by the opinions published by the “mainstream” media, only one emotion was noticeable there: the fear that the nuclear button would slip out of the control of the predictable Putin and into the hands of the impulsive Prigozhin.
Interestingly, Pravda does not mention Iran, which provided Russia with military equipment for the war in Ukraine, although the regime in Tehran expressed its support for Putin only hours after Prigozhin announced the beginning of the uprising.
