Germany wants to buy 60 Chinook helicopters from Boeing in a package that would cost 8 billion euros and also include the necessary infrastructure for the aircraft, a parliamentary source told Reuters on Friday.
The amount includes the purchase of CH-47 heavy transport helicopters worth 6.27 billion euros, 700 million euros for services, 240 million euros for national contracts and 750 million euros for infrastructure, the source said, confirming the press report.
The deal still needs the approval of the German parliament’s budget committee, which is due to discuss the contract before the summer recess.
Last year, Germany announced its intention to purchase 60 Chinook heavy transport helicopters from Boeing to replace its aging CH-53 fleet. Initially, six billion euros were invested in helicopters.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reversed his policy in February 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, dramatically increasing defense spending and allocating €100 billion to the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces.
