A gun attack on a high school in southern Brazil claimed a second victim on Tuesday, with a teenager shot dead on Monday by a former student, local authorities said, AFP reported.

The 16-year-old boy died in the hospital as a result of “multiple organ failure,” the Ministry of Education of the state of Paraná told AFP.

A 17-year-old student, not 16 as authorities initially indicated, died at the scene Monday after being shot by a 21-year-old former high school student from Londrina, according to local media. stated that the two victims were married.

A second 21-year-old person, suspected of organizing the attack, was also detained.

The attacker entered the school under the pretext of “asking him for school work,” according to Paraná state governor Carlos Ratinho Jr., who added that the intervention of a teacher who immobilized the attacker “prevented an even greater tragedy.”

“The teacher who pinned the former student to the ground had recently been trained and the police arrived at the school in just three minutes,” he said.

“Another young life stolen by hatred and violence that we can no longer tolerate in our schools and in our society,” President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva tweeted after the attack, expressing “sadness and outrage.”
