Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, who has been in prison since 2021, will appear in court on Monday, his lawyer said, this time on charges of extremism, AFP and DPA reported.
The Russian dissident faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty of “extremism and rehabilitation of Nazi ideology.”
Since January 2021, Navalny has been in a prison in the Volodymyr region, about 250 kilometers from Moscow, where he is serving a nine-year sentence for fraud.
Since the start of the military campaign in Ukraine in February 2022, most high-profile dissidents in Russia who have not fled the country have been imprisoned or prosecuted, including for denouncing the conflict.
In 2020, Oleksiy Navalny (47 years old), known for his anti-corruption investigations, survived poisoning, which was blamed on the Kremlin.
The new trial began on June 6, but so far only procedural matters have been held behind closed doors.
This time access to the hall will be open, but not for journalists, the legal team of Oleksiy Navalny reported.
In the summer of 2020, Navalny was poisoned with the drug “Novachok” during a trip to Siberia. He blamed the FSB of Russia for this. After treatment in Germany, the opponent returned to Russia, where he was arrested. (Agerpress)
