Pixar’s new animated film “Elementary” debuted with $30 million in weekend ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada, distributor Walt Disney estimated on Sunday.
The U.S. and Canadian debut was underwhelming and one of the lowest-grossing films ever from Pixar, the famous animation studio behind Toy Story, Finding Nemo and other classics.
“Elementary,” a story about overcoming outside differences, has collected $15 million overseas for a total of $45 million, Disney said.
The film has only been released in three major international markets and will also reach other countries in the coming weeks.
Pixar is trying to recover from the box office disappointment of 2022’s Lighter, the origin story of Toy Story character Buzz Lightyear.
The film grossed just $226.7 million worldwide, a fraction of the $1 billion grossed by Toy Story 4 in 2019.
Last month, the director and producer of “Lightyear” was let go as Disney cut 7,000 jobs at the company in an effort to cut costs.
