American adventurer Aaron Carotta left South America to make a solo round-the-world trip in a rowboat called Smiles.

On May 31, he activated the emergency beacon. He had a technical fault and his signal was no longer received.

Five commercial vessels and four pleasure boats participated in the search, which ended on June 12.

But on Thursday, the aid beacon on an inflatable boat was seized again in the area of responsibility of the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), which is coordinating rescue efforts in French Polynesia. According to the High Commission, Smiles was overturned by a wave that launched the lighthouse and Aaron Carotta boarded his lifeboat.

The JRCC then took advantage of the presence in Polynesia of a USCG (United States Coast Guard) C-130 Hercules, an American search aircraft that arrived on another rescue mission. On the same day, this aircraft sighted the deceased in his inflatable boat in an area without islands and with little navigation, east of the Marquesas Archipelago.

The nearest vessel, the tanker Baker Spirit, was 390 kilometers away. He deviated from the course and eighteen hours later found a shipwrecked victim. The tanker resumed its course to Hawaii. The shipwreck will be landed in Honolulu on June 25. (Source: News.ro / Photo: Dreamstime.com)
