If France’s road death rates are not necessarily very good, we should, however, remember the progress made in recent decades. A clear improvement we owe in particular to more technologically advanced and safer cars than before, while the government increases the number of speed cameras on the sides of our roads. So the country is still generally good, especially compared to some of our European neighbours. Because it’s clear we’re not all in the same boat, that’s for sure! But what are there the most dangerous roads on the continent?

Romania is leading

If you’re looking for a vacation spot this summer, avoid romania if you plan to rent a car to get around. Indeed, with 86 deaths per million inhabitants in 2022, this country has the most dangerous roads in Europe. This was announced by the European Commission, which published the annual report on road safety. However, the number of deaths in the country fell by 8% compared to 2021. Croatia is also dangerous, with 71 deaths per million inhabitants, similar to Bulgaria with 78 deaths.

And France?

We calculate on average 49 deaths per million inhabitants, which puts us more on the side of good students. However, with 21 fatalities, Sweden remains the safest country in Europe to drive. It is followed by Norway and Iceland. According to the European Commission, about 20,600 people died in road accidents across the Old Continent last year. This number is still high, although the average increased by 3% to 46 deaths per million inhabitants.
