During the presentation of its strategy for the future of its electric vehicles, Toyota gave some hints about its future batteries, as well as their performance. The Japanese automaker wants to build electric cars faster and cheaper. But how ?

During this event, Toyota introduced the first Giga Castinga formation process that will reduce the production costs of the next electric cars, which will be based on a completely new architecture and will appear in 2026.

What is Giga Casting?

According to the video below and the only photo posted by Toyota on the front page, this Giga Casting is currently concerned that the rear of the car, like what Tesla is doing for the Model Y and the upcoming Cybertruck.

The Japanese group has already said in the past that it wants to take inspiration from Tesla’s manufacturing processes, such as using the famous Giga Press, to simplify production and eventually reduce costs and increase the rate of profit.

Although Toyota did not specify the differences between the old rear end and the new one, we can see in the photo that the old one consisted of at least 33 different elements, while Giga Casting is one big piece of metalwhich, according to the Japanese manufacturer, will dramatically reduce the number of processes involved in production.

What will the new platform look like?

According to its official press release, the new electric platform will consist of three main elements: the front part, the central part (which will house the battery) and the rear part.

According to Toyota, the first electric car based on this new architecture will debut in 2026 under the Lexus brand with a next-generation lithium-ion battery that will provide a range of more than 1,000 km.

The next step in the brand plan will be a “The world leader in the production of batteries” planned for 2026-2027 with the development of a lithium-iron-phosphate battery capable of reducing costs by 40% compared to the previous one, while a lithium-iron battery with 10% more autonomy should enter into operation. production in 2027-2028 .

Toyota is also working on a reliable battery that will appear after 2028 a range of over 900 miles (or approximately 1,500 km) on a full charge.
