This is a frontal assault on prepared (Russian) defensive positions, which is further complicated by Ukraine’s lack of air superiority, the ISV notes.
He emphasizes that these initial attacks should not be used as an indicator of how Ukraine’s other counterattacks will be carried out.
Losses are “inevitable in any military operation,” especially in offensive operations, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said:
“It is not surprising that Ukrainian forces are suffering losses during the first attacks against some of the best-prepared Russian forces in Ukraine. However, the initial attacks – and especially the selected images that Russian sources deliberately disseminate and highlight – are not representative of all Ukrainian operations.”
ISW adds that Russian forces remain dangerous and Ukrainian forces will certainly face an uphill battle, but Ukraine has yet to redeploy the vast majority of its counteroffensive forces, and Russian defenses are not uniform across the front line.
