Russia’s defense minister awarded soldiers with medals on Sunday after Moscow said its forces destroyed four German-made Leopard tanks and five US-made Bradley fighting vehicles while repelling a Ukrainian counteroffensive, Reuters reported.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu appeared on state television to award the Gold Star, Russia’s highest military decoration, to soldiers who he said had destroyed enemy tanks and armored vehicles.
In public, soldiers did not recognize tanks.
In recent days, the Ministry of Defense has published several videos and images showing numerous strikes on armored vehicles and tanks with Ukrainian crews by Ka-52 helicopters and drones.
Reuters could not immediately verify either side’s claims.
In the pictures released by the ministry on Saturday, drones can be seen hitting tanks in the Zaporizhzhia region, where the counteroffensive of Kyiv troops is currently concentrated.
Reuters was able to verify the location of the video about 3 kilometers south of the village of Mala Tokmachika in Zaporozhye by vegetation, crops and buildings that matched satellite images of the area. Reuters could not independently confirm the date the video was shot.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that Ukrainian forces have so far failed in their counteroffensive, but Ukraine’s “offensive potential” has not yet been undermined.
Ukraine’s attack is focused on several points in the south of Ukraine, Russia claims.
While Russia says its lines have not yet been breached, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said in an assessment on Saturday that Ukrainian forces “probably have made significant progress” and “breached Russia’s first line of defense.”
