A US citizen was detained in Russia, according to a message in the Telegram of the courts of general jurisdiction of Moscow.
The man was detained on Saturday, when the “Khamovnytskyi District Court of Moscow chose a preventive measure against the American citizen,” the report says.
The man was identified as “Travis Michael Leake,” according to court records.
“On June 10, 2023, the Khamovnytsky District Court of Moscow chose a preventive measure against the American citizen. A former paratrooper and musician accused of running a drug business involving youth will remain in custody until August 6, 2023,” Russian authorities said, according to Sky News.
The Russian news agency “Interfax” reported that if he is found guilty, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
CNN tried to contact the man’s family in the US and learned from his mother that she was aware of reports of her son’s detention.
She said his name is Michael Travis Leek – spelled differently than in the Russian court statement – and he is known as Travis.
The US State Department said on Saturday it was aware of the report of the US citizen’s detention, but declined to comment further, citing privacy concerns.
“We are aware of reports of the recent arrest of an American citizen in Moscow,” the State Department spokesman said.
“When a US citizen is detained abroad, the department strives to obtain consular access as quickly as possible and to provide all necessary consular assistance,” the statement said.
On June 8, Russian media released a video recording of Lik’s arrest at his home and photos from a Russian police station.
Tabloid Ren TV reported Leek’s statement to the police: “I don’t understand why I’m here. I do not admit to the charges, I do not believe that I could have done what I am accused of, because I do not know what I am accused of.”
CNN filmed Leek in 2014 for an episode of Parts Unknown in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Host Anthony Bourdain personally selected Leake to appear on the show.
In the episode, Leek spoke about his frustrations with censorship and talked about an incident involving his band and MTV.
“It was a documentary series about musicians who stood up and put their lives on the line, in some cases, to stand up to abuse of power, to government corruption,” he said.
