“Festival Settlements”its international multimedia festival “European Capital of Culture Eleusis 2023”, which has just begun and is spreading from one end of the city to the other, they look like nesting dolls. Since it opens up to all forms of art – visual exhibitions, theatrical performances, musical events, film meetings – its Secrets are “opened” in individual actions, performances, initiatives, participations, so that two other themes grow out of one theme, which actually develop over time. .
This is exactly the case of Mystery 69 with the “mystagogue” Menelaos Karamajolis, director and member of the Documentary Group (GR). Documatism is a group of artists, educators, researchers and filmmakers who seek to raise awareness and find solutions to critical social issues through the use of the moving image. Despite the emphasis on social activism, Karamaggiolis’ ability to immerse himself in the most underestimated side of Greek reality and turn it into cinema remains active and relevant.
The Greeks project, which he curates, is another Russian puppet that hides artistic actions and synergies inside. Its goal is social interaction with the residents of the Triasian field area on environmental and social issues. At the heart of Mystery 69 are abandoned and injured stray animals in the wider Triassic region who are extremely popular for overseas adoption despite their apparent disability: the Greeks. The term takes on an allegorical dimension, including anyone who feels isolated or abandoned. The Greeks live in the larger fabric of our own city, a capital city that is expanding uncontrollably with no regard for the ecological consequences of its growth, creating outcasts who live on its outskirts. Spectators of the play become eyewitnesses of unknown landscapes, partakers of an invisible life that one would like to forget about. The project “Greeks” participates this Sunday (20:00) in the program “Neighbourhood” with a complex action that revitalizes an open space – at the junction of Nikolaidou and I. Dragoumis streets – abandoned for a decade. It is an evening full of film screenings, music and dance events and public debates. Unforeseen artistic interventions intervene in the city, creating a dynamic public dialogue with the Eleusinians: teenagers from refugee camps who volunteer to help locals during natural disasters at Mantra, an Afro-Greek with his band enriches Greek traditional music, Eleusinians who redefine meaning” foreigner”, dancing in the city in a wonderful collaboration with contemporary visual artists. The “Neighbors” festival will last until 28.06.
