Ukrainian troops continue counteroffensive actions on at least four areas of the front, analysts of the Institute for the Study of War reported on Saturday.
Ukrainian forces have made further gains around Bakhmut and western Donetsk, ISW claims. Ukrainian officials said Friday that Kyiv forces advanced 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles) during offensive operations near Bakhmut.
However, Russian media bloggers prematurely declared that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had already failed, pointing out the damage Ukrainian military equipment had already suffered.
Some prominent Russian ultranationalists have said that the damaged or destroyed equipment provided by the West indicates that Ukrainian forces have failed to launch a large-scale counteroffensive, ISW notes.
Other Russian nationalists appear to be celebrating and praising Putin’s army, which only carries out basic defense operations that should not be so unusual as to merit widespread praise, ISW said.
Ukrainian officials said they expected equipment losses during counteroffensive operations, adding that the Russians had exaggerated the reported losses to impress the population, in particular, ISW reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also acknowledged that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had begun, noting that Ukrainian forces still had offensive potential.
The change would be in line with the Kremlin’s new information policy, which focuses on Russia’s destruction of Ukrainian equipment rather than downplaying operations, ISW said.
