Although rumors about this song have been circulating in the international press for several weeks, the collaboration between Madonna and Sam Smith is not really a surprise.

“Unholy,” the hugely successful single released by the British star and Kim Petras, is not only one of the most provocative songs to reach number one on the US Billboard chart in recent years, but also uses the same model as Madonna. used several times in his career: this track was intentionally created to stir up controversy and push boundaries both musically and thematically (“Unholy” lyrics are basically about a man’s family member having unprotected sex with other people).

As such, Madonna was the most appropriate person to introduce Sam Smith and Kim Petras before they performed the song at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

“Are you ready for something controversial?” asked the American star. “If people around you tell you that you are shocking, scandalous, problematic, provocative or dangerous, then you must be doing something right,” added the famous pop singer.

The day after the Grammys, Madonna and Sam Smith recorded the song “Vulgar”, which was produced by the same team from the single “Unholy”: producers Ilya, Cirkut, Omer Fedi, Ryan Tedder, Jimmy Napes, Sam Smith. They were joined by Lauren Delia, Madonna’s sound engineer and music producer.

“Vulgar” is singer Sam Smith’s first original composition since the release of Gloria earlier this year, his third studio album, which has moved away from the melodic R&B style of the British star’s previous albums. The North American leg of the Gloria the Tour kicks off next month.

Last August, Madonna released a 50-track retrospective album titled “Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones” ahead of her “Celebration” world tour, which will begin in the Canadian city of Vancouver in July 2023.

“Vulgar” is one of her latest collaborations, along with other singles she’s recorded with big names like The Weeknd and Christine and the Queens. (Agerpress)
