While the new generation of Ford Mustang in Europe is still waiting, the blue oval firm has just unveiled the GT3 version that will take on the 24 Hours of Le Mans during the 2024 edition.
According to the homologation requirements of the GT3 category, this is a model created on the basis of a production car, in this case the Ford Mustang Dark Horse. But, as you can see from the photos, the American GT was quite seriously redesigned, both aerodynamically and mechanically.
The most extreme Ford Mustang
From the standard Ford Mustang Dark Horse, not much remains of the body. Note, for example, the appearance of a noticeable front splitter, additional lights at the level of the grille or even many air intakes for cooling the engine and braking system.
The more observant will also notice the presence of exhaust ports on the sides, rather than the rear. A large gooseneck spoiler sits high on the tailgate, while a huge diffuser sits at the rear. The new Mustang GT3 has a colorful combination of orange, blue, purple and red colors. The car also features a new Ford Performance logo.
V8 is always in play
On the mechanical side, Ford has teamed up with M-Sport for its 5.4-liter V8 engine, which is apparently based on the stock Mustang’s Coyote unit. The engineers revised certain elements, including the tolerance. Compared to the street-legal Mustang, the GT3 has a custom suspension. The engine is connected to the gearbox of the transmission mounted on the rear axle.
Proton Competition is the first team to race the new Mustang GT3. The team will compete in the World Endurance Championship in the 2024 season. Ford Performance and its partner Multimatic Motorsports will also field two Mustang GT3s in the IMSA GTD Pro class.
