Sweden announced on Thursday that it had completed training Ukrainian soldiers to use 50 CV90 light tanks donated to Kiev by Stockholm and said they were “ready for the front”, AFP reported.
Stockholm did not specify how many Ukrainian military personnel participated in this program.
“For security reasons, we will not reveal details about the scope or duration of the training at this stage,” a Swedish armed forces spokeswoman told AFP.
Four companies of mechanized infantry have been training in undisclosed locations across the country in recent months, Swedish news agency TT reported.
The size of companies varies from one country to another, from a few dozen to hundreds of soldiers.
In January, Sweden announced that it would send 50 of its armored combat vehicles to Ukraine.
A CV9040C model was sent to Ukraine, equipped with a 40 mm automatic cannon, which, according to the military, can target a “helicopter hovering at a distance of four kilometers.”
Part of the Ukrainian military “had no experience working with combat vehicles or tanks, but many of them had experience working with the Russian BMP-1 combat vehicle,” one of the Swedish instructors explained.
The Scandinavian country also promised to send its Archer artillery system and NLAW anti-tank missiles to Kyiv.
The following month, it announced it would also send “about 10” Leopard 2 tanks, as well as IRIS-T and HAWK anti-aircraft missile systems.
Shortly after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden abandoned its doctrine of not supplying weapons to countries at war, pledging thousands of AT4 anti-tank weapons.
Then Stockholm promised Ukraine military aid for a total of 16.9 billion Swedish crowns ($1.6 billion).
