Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu announced on Tuesday that he had signed a ministerial order allowing Brasov-Gimbav Airport to handle international flights from mid-June. The new terminal will be inaugurated with two events that will be financed by one million lei by the local authorities.
“Brasov Airport will be able to perform international flights! Today I signed the Minister’s order, according to which the Brasov-Gimbav Airport, under the coordination of the Brasov County Council, was certified as an international airport and will be able to operate foreign flights from mid-June,” Grindianu wrote on Facebook.
At the end of May, councilors of the Brasov district approved a scenario for financing operational costs and future investments in Brasov-Gimbav International Airport to submit a preliminary notification to the European Commission for state aid, Agerpres notes.
According to documents adopted by county councillors, the most pessimistic scenario would have a maximum cost of €2,325,822, and the base, neutral and optimistic scenario would cost €1.98m, both scenarios based on the operating funding shortfall as at 1 March.
At the same time, the documents attached to the Decision adopted on Thursday also refer to investment plans for the future. Thus, under the conditions in which, according to CJ Braşov’s estimates, the threshold of one million passengers will be reached in 2026, the construction of a second terminal will be required.
It will be implemented between 2027 and 2033, and the estimated investment cost will be more than 23 million euros.
The financing of the works will be carried out in proportion to 92% of the revenues from the operation of the airport, the difference of 8% will come from other sources (subsidies, the state budget or European funds).
When will the grand opening of the Brasov airport take place?
The local authorities have prepared several events on the occasion of the grand opening of the Brasov airport.
On the weekend of June 10-12, an event dedicated to the general public “Open Days at the Brasov-Gimbav International Airport” will be held.
The band Zdob si Zdub, Ștefan Bănică Junior and Haddaway, the artist who caused a sensation in the 90s with the song “What is Love”, are the headliners at the event dedicated to the grand opening of Brașov Airport, Biz Brașov reports.
Organizers also promise fireworks, light shows and air shows on both days, as well as a tour of the new terminal, which will handle international flights.
