Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, an ally of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, proposed sending troops to the Belgorod region on Sunday to “deal” with cross-border incursions from Ukraine as the war spreads into Russian territory, CNN reported.
“Let me remind you that the forces of the Chechen units could handle the terrorists who invaded the Belgorod region,” Kadyrov said in Telegram.
“In general, the number of Chechen fighters in battalions and regiments of forces and military structures exceeds 70 thousand people. That is, three armies!” Kadyrov said, adding that he was only waiting for an order on this matter.
Belgorod, a western Russian province bordering Ukraine, has seen an increase in violence in recent weeks.
On Sunday, Belgorod’s governor said in a video that the shelling was reported as Russian dissident groups stepped up pressure in the area.
These groups, the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Russian Legion of Freedom, also claim to have captured Russian soldiers in Belgorod. (news.ro)
