India’s railway minister said on Sunday that the causes and perpetrators of Friday’s train tragedy in the eastern part of the country, one of the worst in decades, have been identified, citing a malfunction in the electronic signaling system.
“We have established the causes of the accident and the people responsible,” Ashwini Vaishnow told ANI news agency today, adding, however, that it is “wrong” to divulge any details before the release of the final report on the incident. .
“A change made during the electronic lockout was responsible for the accident,” he said, referring to the sophisticated signaling system by which the railroad tracks avoid such collisions.
“After a proper investigation, the perpetrators and the way in which the accident occurred will be established,” he stressed.
There is currently confusion over the cause of the accident, but the Times of India, citing a preliminary report, said today that “human error” could have caused the three trains to collide, one of the worst railway tragedies in Indian history.
The Coromandel Express, which ran on the Kolkata-Madras route, was cleared to enter the main line, but due to human error, it ran into another train that was already carrying a commercial train, the newspaper explained.
A passenger train collided with a freight train at a speed of 130 kilometers per hour. Three carriages fell onto adjacent railroad tracks, hitting the back of an express train on the Bangalore-Kolkata route. This collision caused the most damage, adds the Times.
According to the latest data, 288 people were killed and about 900 were injured.
