
The match between River Plate and Defensa y Justicia (19th round of the Argentinian league) was abandoned on Saturday after a home fan fell from the stands at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires and died.
After the incident, the match was suspended after 26 minutes and the venue was evacuated.
“A fan fell from the Sivory Alta tribune and died on the spot. The medical service, the police and various security services immediately arrived at the scene.
The tribune, where the deceased had a season ticket, was 90% full. Bystanders did not intervene at the time of the fall. It was also established that there was no violent situation in or around the stands,” the River Plate club said in a statement.
River Plate, currently ranked first (41 points), said security services and a fiscal unit specializing in mass events have opened an investigation, News.ro reports.
