A motorcyclist died early Sunday after colliding with a competitor in the Ironman Hamburg triathlon, a police officer told public broadcaster NDR, AFP reported.

Almost two and a half hours after the start of the race in the south of the metropolis of Hamburg, the driver of the motorcycle, together with the operator who took part in the video recording of the race, collided with the triathlete during the bicycle race.

Despite the provided first aid, the motorcyclist died on the spot.

“We have a dead person, the motorcycle driver, seriously injured, a participant who was taken to the hospital, but according to current information, nothing is in danger, and a third person, slightly injured, the operator,” he explained to NDR Kurt Wenzel, a representative of the Hamburg police .

The organizers did not stop the race.

It awards the European Ironman title (3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run) and counts towards qualifying for the 2023 Ironman World Championships to be held in Nice in the autumn.
