President Klaus Iohannis responded ironically to a question about the secret cost of the plane he uses to travel abroad, telling journalists who insisted that “colleagues and colleagues from the Administration will explain to them in more detail.”
When asked on Thursday why the President’s Administration is opaque to citizens in providing information about the cost of their trips abroad, as was the case during the mandate of other presidents or even at the beginning of her mandate, the head of state replied that his Administration transmits what it can transmit.
“The president’s administration is very honest and transparent, and even the president personally answers all questions. I do not think that there are serious reasons to suspect the opposite. In addition, being the President’s Administration, there is special legislation that tells colleagues exactly what can and cannot be transferred. I really can’t imagine that you want to encourage anyone in the President’s Administration to break the law. That would be the pinnacle,” said Klaus Iohannis, quoted by news.ro.
When asked what the state secret is about the price of accommodation and transport on foreign trips, the head of state answered: “Colleagues from the Administration will explain to you in more detail. Therefore, I repeat, this is the law, we like it, we don’t like it. We can discuss, maybe we can change it.”
The head of state has used a private jet on several foreign trips this year, such as in March during a working visit to Japan or in the UK in early May to attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III.
At the beginning of March, the presidential administration provided an explanation for the trip of President Klaus Iohannis to Japan by private plane and clarified, upon request of News.ro, how such a decision was made.
“The lack of an aircraft intended for the air transport of high-ranking persons creates operational problems, economic inefficiency and, above all, damages the image abroad,” the institution explained.
