Russia is replacing the Wagner Group troops that seized the city with less effective units from Wednesday until June 5, Michael Clarke, former director general of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), told Sky News.

These are volunteer paratroopers, motorized brigades, and DPR troops.

“The Russians are moving a fairly small force to Bakhmut, which tells me that the Russians don’t expect to be attacked there,” Clark said.

“Because Bakhmut has no strategic value, never has,” he adds

Kyiv insisted its troops still control a small part of the city, which has been the main focus of fighting for months

“It’s a bit like playing roulette. The wheel is turning and now is the time to bet,” Clark said.
