US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who is on a visit to the Scandinavian country, sent a message to Turkey and Hungary asking them to give the green light to Sweden’s entry into NATO.
Two days after the re-election of Recep Tayyip Erdogan as president of Turkey, a major obstacle to Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, the head of American diplomacy reiterated Washington’s call to complete the accession process “in time for the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July.
At a press conference held with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson, Blinken stressed that Stockholm had responded to Ankara’s security concerns, adding that it had repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the goals of the Alliance.
“We believe that now is the time (for Sweden to join NATO),” the US Secretary of State said.
