Chancellor of Germany Olaf Soltz announced today that it has invited the newly elected President of Turkey to Berlin Recep Tayyip Erdoganduring a telephone conversation in which he congratulated him on his re-election, with the aim of giving new impetus to cooperation between the two countries.
NATO members Germany and Turkey want to “redefine cooperation between the two governments with new impetus and agree on common priorities in time,” Olaf Scholz’s spokesman Steffen Heberstreit said in a press release.
To this end, President Erdogan was “invited to Berlin on an official visit,” he added, without specifying a date.
The spokesman said that Scholz emphasized the close relationship between Germany and Turkey, especially as NATO allies.
“Both agreed to approach cooperation between the two governments with new impetus and agree on common priorities in a timely manner.”
The spokesman said the two leaders “want to work together to achieve positive developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, on the pending decisions taken within NATO and on Turkey’s relations with the European Union.”
For its part, the Turkish presidency said Erdogan was in favor of “putting forward initiatives to strengthen bilateral relations” that have suffered in recent years.
