Today was one of Ukraine’s “toughest days” of the war after Russia launched a new wave of airstrikes across the country, a foreign policy adviser said, according to Sky News.
An overnight shelling of the capital Kyiv, during which Ukrainian defense forces reportedly intercepted most of the missiles and drones, was followed this morning by another Russian attack with cruise and ballistic missiles.
In a conversation with Sky News, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Ihor Zhovkva called the latest attacks “terrible.”
“This is actually the reality we live with every day and every night,” he said.
“This is one of the worst days of the war, and unfortunately we believe it may happen again,” he said.
Asked why Moscow targeted Kyiv and not military targets, Zhovkva said Russian forces attacked civilian areas to “hinder Ukraine from what it plans to do on the battlefield” — likely referring to the intended a large-scale counteroffensive by Kyiv.
Zhovkva noted that Kyiv receives “much more quantity and quality” of arms assistance from the international community to prepare for a counteroffensive, but added that Ukraine still needs “more and more air defense systems.”
“We need … fighter jets as part of air defense, because where we lack anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems, we use jets,” he concluded.
