“We ask you to meet with the executive bodies of the three representative federations in education on May 30, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. We appeal – once again – to Your Majesty, as a mediator between the state and society, to receive real and immediate solutions for the education system from the Executive. The document was submitted on Monday and registered in the Presidential Administration.

In a document signed by the leaders of three trade union federations, the head of state reminds of the demands of tens of thousands of teaching and non-teaching workers who signed up for a general strike.

Thus, these requirements relate to salary increases for education workers; salary equivalent to the average salary in the economy for beginning teaching staff; progressive salary depending on training, seniority and teaching degree for teachers; annual indexation, depending on the level of inflation, of employees’ wages at the expense of state funds; overtime payment; provision of allowances for working conditions for education workers; provision of such rights as travel allowance, accommodation allowance, additional leave, monetary compensation for unused leave; annual increase in investment in education to improve the material and technical base and infrastructure in this field.

“Unfortunately, so far, the Government’s proposal does not meet any of these requirements”; The unions are also writing to President Klaus Iohannis, reminding him that Monday is the sixth day of a general strike in the education system and the strikers’ “legitimate demands” have received an “absolutely unsatisfactory response” from the government.

“Your Excellency, to have an educated Romanian requires a significant investment in education and a motivated human resource,” say the union figures at the end of the request.
