The National Council of Students is asking for an emergency procedure to be established for the enrollment of students for the bachelor’s exam, in the context of which these enrollments were supposed to start on Monday, but “some students in Romania will not have this opportunity.”

“Registration for the bachelor’s exam, the first stage of the calendar of all-important national exams, is due to begin today. But, unfortunately, some students in Romania will not have this opportunity, taking into account the entire context in which we are and the possibility that the human resources of some educational units will not allow to optimally organize this process,” the National Council emphasized. This was stated in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Nikolay Chuke and Minister of Education Ligia Deci on Monday.

They add that classes for twelfth graders should end at the end of next week.

There may be situations where some students will not be able to register for a bachelor’s degree

“The voices of these students, who do not yet know how their school situation will end, must be listened to in parallel with the support of all of us in the teaching staff. In this sense, we ask you to materialize as soon as possible all the offers coming from teachers in Romania. Also, in the near future, we want to establish an extraordinary procedure for enrolling students in the bachelor’s program.

In accordance with the current legislation, 12th grade teachers and the secretary of the relevant educational unit are involved in the registration. Thus, situations may arise when individual students from different classes and educational units will not be able to enroll.

Despite our repeated calls for accountability addressed to the Romanian government, we see how the situation is still not resolved and the insecurity among the students of the last years is growing every day that this situation persists. (…) It is obvious that the negotiations conducted so far have not outlined a viable solution to the existing conflict,” student representatives say.

Unions say national exams may be postponed

Registration for the baccalaureate examination began on Monday, amid a general strike by education workers in its second week. The Ministry of Education has already sent out that the principals of educational institutions who can provide the personnel needed for registration will inform parents and students of all the details necessary for registration.

The government has already tabled a proposal to force unionized education workers to end their strike, but they have rejected it. Responding to the question whether the scenario of rescheduling the final exams is being developed in this context, the leader of the National Federation “Spiru Haret” Marius Nistor said: “Everything is possible as long as the Government’s behavior is this way.”

“According to the bachelor’s exam calendar for 2023, the registration of applicants for the first examination session is scheduled from May 29 to June 7. Heads of educational institutions, which can provide the necessary personnel potential for this type of activity, will inform parents and students of all the necessary points for registration,” the Ministry of Education reported.

The institution stated that it will continue to be in constant contact with the representatives of the school inspectorates of the district/municipality of Bucharest in order to avoid situations that could cause unconsciousness during activities aimed at both students and teaching staff, in accordance with the legal framework imposed by the context of the protest of pre-university teaching staff (News.ro)
