Venetians they woke up on a Sunday morning to a strange sight in their city: the waters of one of their famous canals were green.
Local authorities took water samples and launched an urgent investigation.

There are many speculations about what could have caused the discoloration of the water around the famous Rialto Bridge, from a paint spill to a protest by environmental activists.
Residents of the city were the first to pay attention to the unusual green color, who informed the prefect of Veneto, Luca Zaia, via Twitter. “The prefecture has called an emergency meeting with the police to investigate the origin of the liquid,” he said.

According to Italian media reports, police are checking CCTV footage to see if paint splashed into the water is related to this weekend’s Bolgalonga regatta.

Many have commented on social media that the images are reminiscent of 1968, when Argentine artist Nicolás García Uriburu painted green on the waters of the Grand Canal as part of an environmental awakening.
