​On the incredibly noisy court 12, Iryna Begu made the most of her unparalleled experience and after a real duel of nerves overtook the Hungarian Anna Bondar (104 WTA rating). The best player of Romania (according to the current rating) reached the second round of Roland Garros.

The 12th court of the Roland Garros complex is “joined” with the 13th under the same stands, and noise accompanied Irina’s match.

Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Sonego played in the arena next door (while it was just a fence) and the crowd was like a Davis Cup match (in many cases both players couldn’t hear what their coaches were saying).

Favorite 27 Iryna entered the match with difficulty and gave her opponent both the initiative and the advantage on the scoreboard (Anna led with a score of 3-1 and 4-2).

Like a diesel engine, Iryna gradually began to enter the parameters. She was able to read the opponent’s game, absorb the force of her blows and alternate hard balls with soft, non-rhythmic ones.

It took two sets (6-4, 6-2) for the game, and Iryna completed the score after one hour and 39 minutes.

The match featured marathon games, sneaky moves, and showed that Iryna is a tough player to beat on clay, especially when she uses her tactical intelligence.

Begu made the difference when the nerves were at their peak, she knew how to pull herself together in difficult moments, she cheered herself up when it was needed more and she had the strength to smile at the end of a match she won with her mind.

• In the second round, Iryna will meet the Roland Garros finalist (2012 edition): Sarah Errani (36 years old, former 5th ranked player in the world).

• During that time, Begu and Errani met five times, the score 3-2 in favor of the Italian.

• Thanks to the success in the first round, Iryna Begu will receive 97,000 euros and 70 points in the WTA singles ranking.

The Roland Garros tournament takes place from May 28 to June 11, has a total prize pool of 49.6 million euros, and is the 127th tournament. Iga Sviatek and Rafael Nadal (14-time winner in Paris) became the champions of the title.
