At the national refugee summit in Berlin on May 10, the federal and state governments agreed to introduce stationary checks only if absolutely necessary.

Germany has maintained such border controls along its border with Austria since 2015, when tens of thousands of people reached Western Europe via the Balkan route.

But Germany’s other borders, including Poland and the Czech Republic, are checked only through spot checks and other measures.

The interior ministers of the eastern German states of Brandenburg and Saxony are pushing for Feser to introduce border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic, which are also crossing points for migrants heading to Germany.

Official data show that the number of unauthorized entries through Poland has increased significantly. Between January and March this year, 4,013 cases were reported, ahead of Austria with 3,674 cases. In April, 2,427 people entered Germany via Poland, 1,298 via Austria.
