Recall that on Thursday the judge considering the case Corruption scandal in Katargate, which shocked the European Parliament in December last year, Michelle Cleese decided that the Greek MEP would be able to move freely outside his residence, but under certain conditions, such as not leaving Belgium without the permission of the investigator, to be monitored by a social assistance worker, but also not to enter in contact with any of the persons involved in the case under investigation. Commenting on the conditions, which will be in effect until August 25, her lawyers noted that the restrictive condition on the ban on leaving Belgium “does not bother her, since she will return to Greece only after a judicial acquittal.”

This was preceded by a decision to end electronic monitoring two weeks ago for her partner Francesco Giorgi and for the Belgian MEP Marc Tarabella, who even last Wednesday participated normally in the debate and vote in the parliamentary committee on fisheries. Both the Greek MEP and her Belgian counterpart have been charged with corruption, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization. Both, like their Italian counterpart Andrea Coccolino, who was extradited to Belgium by the Naples Court of Appeal last week, have not ceased to be members of parliament and therefore receive regular salaries while retaining the right to vote. However, all three were excluded from the political group of European Socialists and Democrats. The former MEP and two of her colleagues pleaded not guilty and did not cooperate with the judiciary during the detention, unlike the alleged “instigator” of the scandal, former MEP Antonio Panzeri, who remains under house arrest.
