A passenger on an Asiana Airlines flight told police he opened the plane’s door minutes before it landed in Daegu, South Korea on Friday because he felt “uncomfortable,” Yonhap news agency reported, Reuters reported.

The 30-year-old man told police he opened the door because he “wanted to get off the plane quickly,” Yonhap reported, citing police.

He also said he was stressed after losing his job recently.

The man opened the door when the plane was about 215 meters above the ground, causing panic on board.

Nine passengers were hospitalized with breathing problems. According to a representative of the fire service, everyone was discharged after about two hours.

Police plan to arrest the man after completing the investigation, Yonhap reported.

Jin Sung-hyung, a former Korean Air cabin security officer, said that as far as he knew, the incident was unprecedented, but there had been cases of passengers opening emergency exits without permission while the plane was in flight.

A South Korean Transport Ministry official said yesterday that it was possible to open the emergency exits at or near ground level because the pressure inside and outside the cabin is the same.
