German police said on Friday they were investigating Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters for inciting hatred after he wore a Nazi uniform to a concert in the German capital.

“We are investigating suspicions of inciting hatred, because the clothes worn on stage probably glorify or justify the National Socialist regime and disturb public peace,” said police spokesman Martin Halweg, quoted by news.ro.

Images posted on social media show Waters wearing a long black coat and red headbands during the May 17 concert at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin.

Several German and Israeli media also called out the names of Anne Frank and Shireen Abu Akle, the Palestinian-American journalist for Al Jazeera who was killed in an Israeli raid in May 2022, in red letters on the screen during the concert.

“We are conducting an investigation and after the process is completed we will hand it over to the prosecutor’s office for a final legal assessment,” said a police spokesman, stressing that the prosecutor’s office will take any action.

Concert in Berlin criticized by Israel

The concert drew criticism from Israel. Israel’s Foreign Ministry thus criticized Waters on Wednesday for “shaming the memory of Anne Frank and the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust.”

“Waters Wants to Compare Israel to Nazis.” He is “one of the greatest critics of the Jews of our time,” Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, wrote on Twitter.

Waters, who is 79 years old, has distinguished himself in recent years for his stance, especially on the war in Ukraine.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “was provoked”

“It is not true that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was unprovoked,” he said on February 8 before the UN Security Council, where he was invited by Russia to speak.

He also defends actions to boycott Israeli products in the name of defending the Palestinian cause.

The authorities of Frankfurt canceled the concert of the British singer on May 28, but the decision was overturned by the administrative court in the name of freedom of speech.

A protest demonstration against Roger Waters’ new concert in Germany on Sunday in Frankfurt is also planned at the call of the local Jewish community and, in particular, the Green Party.
