Ioannis Sharmas: The Duty of Impartial Government
As Ioannis Sarmas stated: “I wish you all success in your work. I invited you to a short cabinet, because now that you have taken up your posts, I wanted to give you some instructions, in view of tomorrow’s cabinet, which will be, so to speak, normal.
Today I will talk with you for 5-10 minutes, if anyone has any questions, I will answer, and the discussion will take place tomorrow, where we will decide – in accordance with what is provided for by the Constitution and the state personnel law – state policy, which of course, as you understand, is not normal public policy, this is public policy for a few weeks.
However, as required by the Constitution and the law, we must have direction, and the Prime Minister controls the implementation of public policy.
The first thing I wanted to say is that our government – I said it yesterday – is a provisional government, chaired by one of the three chief justices. This is exactly what the constitutional legislator wanted. The very essence of the judicial function lies in independence and impartiality. And if the Constitution appointed the Chairman of the Supreme Court, a representative of the judiciary, as Prime Minister for this period, this means that the Constitution required an electorally independent, I would say, politically and party-wise and impartial government.
This is our main duty and duty, I would say, to a democratic state. We must be neutral, unbiased, objective and, above all, we must weigh our actions, because it is perhaps easy to evaluate not the act in itself as having a political character, but even the consequences of our actions so that they are not considered to constitute an interference in favor of or against a political faction in the next election campaign.”
