The cargo was discovered in a container on a Liberian-flagged ship at the port terminal of Paita, a small town near Ecuador. No arrests were reported.
This is the first time that anti-narcotics police have reported seizing a shipment of cocaine bearing the symbols of Nazi Germany (1933-1945).
Peru is among the top three producers of cocaine in the world, along with Bolivia and Colombia. The authorities estimate its annual production at 400 tons. In 2022, about 22 tons were withdrawn.
Colombia’s neighbors built the largest drug submarine ever captured
The unprecedented seizure by Peruvian police comes after the Colombian Navy announced earlier in May that it had seized the largest submarine used to transport drugs in Colombia’s history, measuring 30 meters long and 3 meters wide.
There were 3 tons of cocaine on board.
The semi-submersible was seized on Tuesday as it was en route to Central America, one of the busiest drug-trafficking routes to the United States, which is the biggest consumer of Colombian cocaine.
Over three decades, the Colombian navy has confiscated 228 such boats, which are loaded with tons of drugs, sailing to the United States or even crossing the Atlantic to Europe.
