An overweight 48-year-old man with Diogenes syndrome needed the help of firefighters to get out of his apartment in Barcelona. The man called 112 around 8:30 a.m. to ask for help because he had fallen and couldn’t get out of the house, fire department sources confirmed.
With the help of an excavator, since the doors did not open, firefighters removed the bags, plastic, boxes and other debris that had accumulated in the man’s house. As a result, firefighters pulled the man out with the help of a lifting vehicle. The firefighters were wearing masks and biological protection suits. Police sources said they had never acted in such an extreme situation. Rescue work lasted a total of seven hours.

Police say the man has not left his home since the pandemic, when he began working remotely.
Currently, the man is in the hospital, but, according to police sources, nothing threatens his life. The City Council is working with medical staff to monitor his condition. “We need to analyze whether he can return home or whether he should be placed in a social and medical center,” the authorities say.
