Iranian authorities they started “medieval” execution of a personin front of a crowd of people condemned a human rights organization, Iran Human Rightsbased in Norway.

The man was found guilty of “land corruption” – the most serious offense under the criminal code. It was performed in Marrakeshcity in northwestern Iran.

“The international community cannot accept such medieval practices,” the director of the IHR commented. Mahmoud-Amiri Moghadamnoting that this execution shows “the true face of a government trying to survive” using cruel and humiliating methods.

Footage posted on Iranian news sites shows a crowd gathering to watch the execution. Authorities hold back the crowd with security tape while prosecutors address journalists.

The convict has blindfolded and standing between two hooded executioners. In another photo, he is standing on a chair with a noose around his neck. In the next, his corpse is hanging from a rope. The moment of his death is not on the footage.

This man was arrested about five years ago and convicted of offenses related to his “association with women.” However, it is not clear what exactly his crime was.

Public executions in Iran are relatively rare, as almost all hangings take place in prisons. There were no public executions in 2021, according to IHR. Last year there were two of them: one in July in Shiraz, and the other in December in the city of Mashhad. What makes today’s execution especially unusual is that it took place during the day, in front of a crowd of people and in the presence of journalists. The two previous executions could be classified as public, but they took place before dawn and with almost no witnesses.
