It was first staged in 2019 at the National Theater in London under the title “Hansard”. His job Simon Woodsportrait of the British ruling class of the late 1980s, loved by viewers for its bold and witty approach to politics and much more.
These were the elements that initially fascinated the director and actor. Andrea Arauso (“Bacon/Freud”, “O Karagiozis”) to present the play in Cyprus and even at the all-Greek premiere under the title “Fileand their main characters Varnavas Kyriazis And Annita Santoriniou. Now the show, translated and staged by Arauz, is coming to Municipal Theater of Piraeus, 30 May with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus.
“I read the work of Simon Woods and was excited. It is human, human-oriented,” says Andreas Arauzos to K. The story follows Thatcher’s Conservative Minister Robin Hesketh as he returns to the country house he and his wife have shared for thirty years on a summer morning in 1988. His wife Diana is behaving strangely. The fox destroys the garden and then they slowly begin to unearth the mysteries. And over time, what started as an ordinary quarrel turns into a bitter marital quarrel. Choosing this particular duet, the work focuses on the issue of accepting neighbors, whether they are politicians, spouses, parents, teachers, etc.
“What begins as a clash of political ideologies between the right and the left regarding Cyprus and Greece then goes deep into the couple’s historical past, revealing to us what really goes on between them and the behavioral mechanisms they choose to coexist with. and survive.”
The two protagonists, who coexisted for several years at the Karolo Kun Art Theater and then for many years at THOK, meet again at the board in one of the most important moments for both of them.
“I have had the pleasure and honor to work with Varnavas Kyriazis since 2015 on a series of very strong projects with wonderful roles and incarnations that he himself has played, such as Freud, Picasso, Mark Rothko,” says Mr. Arauzos. “This is our first collaboration with Annita Santoriniou, and after reading the play, I had no doubt that she was the most suitable for this role.”
What will the viewer get?
He believes the show’s value lies in asking the viewer to think about the issues of acceptance – what has changed and what has improved since 1988. “I am very interested in the viewer to think, position, decide, define and be inspired. I passionately want to convey to the public what I liked in the work of the author, through theater, acting, actors.
The reaction of the audience to the very successful premiere in Cyprus naturally excited Arauzos. And he was doubly happy when the opportunity presented itself to present his work in Athens.
What is the director’s goal in staging this play? “Maybe we should think about how far we still have to go in terms of adoption. After all, theater is not a lecture, but entertainment and inspiration.”
